Ang Li

Ang Lee

Hailed as “a potential figure of huge significance on the international concert stage” by the Star-Telegram (Fort Worth) and “a revelation” by La Press (Montréal), Ang Li is an internationally acclaimed piano virtuoso whose performance credits and talents reach well beyond her years. Her youth, artistry, and audience appeal truly make her one the world's rising classical piano stars with an extensive repertoire ranging from early Baroque to contemporary piano music.

Born in Beijing to a deeply musical family, Ang Li revealed her natural gifts by exploring the piano as a toddler, and by the age of six had already made her first public appearance at the Beijing Concert Hall. She maintains a close relationship with her native China, releasing her self-titled debut solo CD in 2008 under the China Record Corporation label, and performing a nationally televised debut recital in that country as part of the 2007 “Meet in Beijing Arts Festival”.  In 2007, she was invited by the China National Center for the Performing Arts to replace pianist Yundi Li in the performance of the Ravel Piano Concerto in G major with The China National Orchestra. She was immediately re-engaged to perform at that venue with the Beijing Symphony in 2008.

From the age of 13, when she made her orchestral debut with the Little Orchestra Society of New York at Avery Fisher Hall, Ang Li has appeared in many internationally renowned venues, such as The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York, Harris Concert Hall in Aspen, The National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall of The University of Winnipeg in Manitoba, La Chapelle Historique du Bon-Pasteur in Montréal, Ruïnekerk of Bergen in the Netherlands, Hong Kong City Hall, and the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. Other orchestral appearances include the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Staten Island Symphony, The Lanaudière Music Festival Orchestra, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, American Academy of Conducting Orchestra, and the Manhattan School of Music Repertory Orchestra.

Ms. Li’s numerous live broadcasts include the opening recital for the 2006 NAC/CBC Aber Diamond Debut Series in Ottawa, Canada, by the Canadian Broadcasting Company, and a  Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts performance celebrating the Juilliard School’s centennial year, broadcast live on the internet. Ms. Li was also featured on WQXR in a simulcast performance at the Instituto Cervantes New York hosted by David Dubal.

At ease in the competitive circuit as she is on the concert stage, Ms. Li is a recipient of numerous honours and prizes. She was awarded first prize and five special prizes at the 2003 OSM Competition in Montréal. She has also won first prizes at the Manhattan School of Music Concerto Competition, The Kingsville International Piano Concerto Competition, the Isabel Scionti Piano Solo Competition, The Chiang Wen Yeh International Music Competition, the Kiwanis Concerto Competition in Toronto, the American Academy of Conducting Piano Competition at The Aspen Music Festival, and Special Award at the Wideman Piano Competition. As the winner of the 2007 Contemporary Record Society Competition, Ms. Li recorded a CD for the CRS featuring chamber music by Brahms and Russo, and contemporary solo piano works by Schlenck.

A list of the esteemed teachers and collaborators who have worked with or supported Ang Li’s impressive rise in the world of classical piano includes the Kennedy Center’s Joseph Kalichstein, instructors Yoheved Kaplinsky, Eleanor Sokoloff, Philip Kawin, Arkady Aronov and Zhao Ping Guo, and masterclass leaders Richard Goode and Vladimir Feltsman, to name just a few.  Ms. Li was invited to perform three pre-concert concert recitals for Marta Argerich at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia and has appeared in concert with Mr. Kaplinsky at the Aspen Music Festival.
