Julia Halfyard
Cabaret Performer
Upcoming Cabaret artist Julia Halfyard has fans from New York Cabaret producers to former US President George Bush. Classically trained with a Master’s in Voice Performance from Memorial University in St. John’s, Ms. Halfyard moved into the world of Cabaret like a hand into a glove—her tremendously successful Cabaret series at the exclusive Cigar Volante at Bianca’s in St. John’s led to a run at the ‘Velvet’, one of Montreal’s highly regarded Cabaret clubs.
Chosen by CBC Music Craft as a guest, she frequently hosts specials on Cabaret music. She has worked with a variety of Musical Theatre companies throughout Canada and in 2007 was chosen to attend the prestigious Cabaret Conference at Yale University with 35 other participants from around the world. When Broadway producers there heard “the little Irish girl” from Newfoundland sing, she was immediately invited to bring her one-woman show to New York City, now booked for the spring of 2009.
Ms. Halfyard was selected to sing in the 2002 Juno showcase series and the 2003 East Coast music awards and in 2002 her colleagues at the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland nominated her as ‘Female Artist of the Year’.
Julia’s take on cabaret is refreshing: everything with a smile and with lots of laughter. From the fearful woman who falls in love with her dentist because he looks like George Clooney and has a drill, to her milky perfect rendition of “La Vie en Rose”, and her imaginative punishments for a lover “much more married” than he originally let on, Julia Halfyard can be counted on to leave everyone smiling. With pianist Brian Way, she takes the stage with a variety of costumes and a minimum of props to deliver a show of incredible value.
